Message to Senior Families - 5/5/2020

Dear Parents and Class of 2020 Students,

We are so proud of the senior Class of 2020!

As the nation makes progress in the fight against COVID-19, local, State, and Federal officials are updating guidelines daily. The health and safety of students remains our focus as restrictions are gradually eased throughout the State.  In light of the latest recommendations, I would like to provide you with some updated information and revisions to the commencement ceremonies we have planned for the CJUHSD Classes of 2020.

The following background information on how and why we arrived at our initial plan will hopefully clarify the decisions we have made. After the Governor’s Executive Order was presented and the initial guidelines from the San Bernardino Department of Public Health were reviewed, it was clear that we were not permitted to participate in any mass gathering (which would include a traditional graduation, a student-only social-distanced graduation, or even multiple, smaller graduations) at this time. Furthermore, the guidance from our Governor and County officials forecasted that mass gatherings would not be permitted in the upcoming months, so, we initially did not say if we would, or would not, schedule a graduation at a later time. Rather, we chose to wait so that we didn’t initiate false hope. I regret that decision, because as we now see the guidelines are continuing to shift and adjust, and we are finding that no one knows what our directives will be in the months ahead. In spite of this uncertainty, the one thing this Class deserves is hope. Our students have grown up having to deal with difficult news – they are resilient and they are prepared to do that, but they deserve for us to believe, with them, that something can happen in their favor. They deserve for us to value them, plan a graduation for them, and hope and advocate for the best – even if the end result is a modified ceremony or the disappointing news that we are not permitted to conduct a ceremony if it might compromise their safety.

Today, once again, we received adjusted guidelines from our County regarding graduation criteria that are actually even more stringent than originally stated. We respect and accept these new restrictions knowing the health and safety of our students and staff are the most important consideration. With these new guidelines in mind, we will continue to hold our Individual Graduations and the filming for our Virtual Graduations on the dates as planned - with some procedural adjustments that will align with County directives. Your principal will provide detailed adjustments and specific directions on the school website and through their Twitter account. We are continuing the Individual and virtual graduations so that no matter what happens, our Class of 2020 will be recognized.

Additionally, after talking with our student leaders today, we will also schedule what we sincerely hope will be a more traditional graduation on July 30, 2020 at 6:30 p.m. In discussions with ASB and Senior Class Presidents, they have requested that we continue to hope and plan for a traditional ceremony late in the summer, before the next school year starts and many students head off to college. This traditional ceremony will be voluntary. If we are not allowed to publicly gather on this date, then we will ultimately have to abide by directives from the Governor’s Office, the County Department of Education, and our County Department of Public Health. We remain hopeful and are moving forward with plans for this more traditional ceremony. We believe that this can happen for the Class of 2020.

Thank you for your compassion for these students and for your passion that this can be done. Please follow updates on the CJUHSD website or go to my Twitter account at @CJUHSD or your principal’s Twitter account for details regarding these events.

    Principal's message

    Hello Jaguar Family!

We are near the end of the school year and our students will finish their final days in distance learning. We will show our virtual graduation ceremony on May 20th at 6:30 p.m. A link to view it will be posted soon.

We will continue to serve lunch from 11:30 to 12:30 until May 21st.

I want to thank you for supporting our school and most importantly for supporting your son/daughter. Our students have accomplished a lot this school year. Although we were confronted with historical challenges and transitioned to distance learning, our students rose to the challenge.

Have a great summer! When students return, Ontario High School will have a new principal, Mr. Larry Rook ! Mr. Rook was an assistant principal for many years at OHS and has been a part of our great culture. He knows our school and I know he will be an excellent principal!

Congratulations to the class of 2020, we are proud of you!

It has been an honor to be your principal!
